Energy Challenges
The typical residence in the south US employs standard construction techniques that have not changed much in the last 15-20 years, other than perhaps better, more durable building products and some foundation improvements. The typical construction is still based on wood frame on concrete slab foundation, with insulated wall space, and open attic construction that relies on soffit and ridge or other vent system to provide attic cooling, which can be inefficient. Hot air in the summer is stagnant in most cases, because the ventilation system is not adequate.
Insulation has improved, but the bulk of the electrical consumption results from cooling during summer months. During summer months temperatures in roof spaces can reach as high as 140°F. This heat radiates downwards causing discomfort in living areas and forcing air conditioners to work harder.
This can render insulation ineffective, cause mildew & mold on walls and ceilings and contribute to a damp environment. We all know that the cost of air conditioning during summer is the largest contributor to the residential electricity bill, and the systems in most use today, are outdated and inefficient.
Currently, our company is the USA mainland distributor for turbine ventilators and tubular skylight products manufactured by CSR Edmonds and assembled and distributed in the USA by SSI-Global. Adequate attic cooling is the first step in reducing energy costs as shown below:

In Winter, without adequate roof space ventilation, moisture and dampness can accumulate above ceilings affecting insulation and promoting mildew.

In Summer, without ventilation, heat radiates from roof spaces into living areas below. Living conditions are uncomfortable and energy is wasted for cooling.
Energy Solutions
The solution to reduced energy consumption is therefore made up of a number of components, and total self reliance on generating one’s own energy needs takes on a different form. New houses might employ techniques such as increased insulation, heat shielding in roofs, or different roof types, but what about the millions of homes already constructed? What does the solution look like?
It is obviously cost prohibitive to completely tear down and put up a near zero emissive home. Changing light bulbs to compact florescent only goes so far, and can only reduce consumption by about 5 percent, as the bulk of the energy consumption is forfeited in running the compressor for the cooling system.
The solution also has several dimensions. The solution must impact the bottom line for the consumer (wallet), and conservation will naturally flow from this. We will thus look at 2 main areas:
-
Reduction of energy needs
-
Generation of electricity to meet remaining needs after reduction
These two items are the focus of SSI-Global. The specific plan to meet these two main objectives follows in the form of a further breakdown:
- Economical generation of power to sustain needs with excess going back to the grid (utility provider).
- More efficient air-conditioning systems that consume less and more efficient heating systems.
- Adequate cooling of attic space utilizing renewable mechanical means, whilst increasing value to consumer.
Technology
The technologies utilized by SSI-Global are wholly concentrated in the renewable energy category specifically related to the generation of power and in the eco-friendly heating and cooling sectors of the industry. The products currently offered and those still in development are tailored to fit the needs of today's growing interest and demand for alternative, affordable and dependable energy solutions. Rising energy costs and the lack of the dependable product types are main drivers for our company.
Principally, the area of primary focus are as follows:
- Solar concentrators and grid tied power systems
- Wind turbines less than 20 kW
- Combination wind turbine generators & roof (attic) structure cooling
- Heating and cooling systems utilizing earth heat and cool sinks
Currently, our company is the USA mainland distributor for residential and commercial grade turbine ventilators and solar tubular skylight products manufactured by CSR Edmonds and assembled and distributed in the USA by SSI-Global. We see adequate attic cooling as one of the first steps in reducing energy costs.
The company will also offer wind turbine generation products within a short timeframe. We are currently developing new products in the areas of residential wind power generation that will be available soon. In addition to these products, we are currently developing new commercial thermal solar products and heating & cooling systems.
